FUTURES Shares swing up strongly
March share-index futures yesterday closed 85 points up on the Tuesday finish. At 2995, they were at a 2.66 per cent discount to the Barclay’s index, which was 31.69 points up at 3074.69. Activity in share futures continues to be heavy: more than 500 lots traded. Mr Mark Thiele, of Egden Wignall and Company Futures, said share futures contracts were on a rally all day, and closed on their highs. The indications were that the gap made on Tuesday would be closed today, he added. The share futures index, basis March, would probably go to 3050 today, he suggested, but it might be sold off this afternoon. He believes Barclays index will be up, and then down. Short term interest rates fell sharply on the physical market, and 90day bank-accepted bill futures rose sharply, March closing 10 points above the Tuesday close -and June 40 points up. Government stock futures closed about three points firmer a contract. Mr Thiele said there seemed more potential for
these contracts to fall, and the March contract could fall to its previous lows of 8220. Wool futures were slightly weaker yesterday but prices are still high. After a long spell of inactivity, the U.S. dollar contract was fairly busy in the face of a firm New Zealand dollar.
