Hornby to Opawa in two days
For Dominion Breweries Canterbury staff, Friday, October 17, 1986, was not just another day. It was the time of the big move across town into new premises.
There were a number of reasons for the move from Shands Road, Hornby, to Brougham Street, Opawa. Perhaps the most pressing was the need for more space. The old premises housed 30 office and sales staff within 915 m, whereas the new office has almost four times that space.
The new site is also closer to the centre of Christchurch for easier distribution arid a better
service to trade customers.
Actually moving their entire stockholding, staff, plant, and computer equipment from Hornby to Opawa was a massive and daunting undertaking given the need for speed and no loss of work days. So, DB called in the experts in time management, the project manager for the operation, Arrow International, to organise the shift. “It required a large amount of pre-planning and co-ordination and had to be done over one weekend,” says Bob Foster, director of Arrow International. “We believe that with
our help, DB achieved a smooth and well co-ordi-nated ■ shift, which would have been difficult for DB management to achieve alone, given their other pressing business commitments.” A small task force was set up, a removals programme drafted and DB group leaders were assigned timetables and tasks. As a result, the. operation was a complete success.
The following Monday, everything was installed at the new office, computere were plugged in and stock was pouring out of the warehouse in preparation for the Christmas period.
