Mixed yarding at fair
There was a very mixedquality yarding at the Ashburton County second strong twotooth ewe fair at the Tinwald Saleyards yesterday. Some lines reflected the effects of recent dry conditions, while other well-grown heavily-woolled lines reached $3O or more.
Prices varied accordingly. These ranged between $14.50 for a line of 154 Romney ewes and $36.50 for a good line of Romney ewes sold on account of L. T. and F. B. Innes, of Rokeby. A second pen of Innes’ sheep sold for $34. There was a lot of interest in the big well-grown well-woolled ewes.
Auctioneers from Pyne Gould Guinness and Wrightson Dalgety had to work hard to shift buyers over the $3O mark. Only a limited number of pens made more than $3O. Buyers were mostly interested in lines around $26. There was a reasonably large gallery, but only a limited number of buyers at the fair. Most sheep sold were Romneys, although there were some Romney Cross and Drysdale ewes.
A pen of Drysdale ewes on account of J. T. Oram (Mount Butt) sold under the auctioneer’s hammer for $27.75.
