Outstanding fillies set to make Breeders’ Stakes best yet

Five two-year-old fillies, boasting 16 wins between them, look set to turn on the best Breeders’ Stakes yet when they compete for a purse of $75,000 at Matamata tomorrow. The race, which was established in 1969, has provided some excellent contests; seldom has the winner proved vastly superior to her rivals.

It is doubtful, though, whether quite as many fillies of the quality of Tasman Dancer, Savana City, Noble Times, Jennifer Rush and Echorlna have been on hand for the one race.

There are 10 other acceptors. Six of these are winners and another has finished second in her last three starts, but it would be a major surprise if any was successful. The records show this race to be usually won by one of the three favourites.

A year ago it was

Scotch and Dry (2-1 in the betting) and working back six years they were Ma Chiquita (3-2), Vin D’Amour (—), Tangent (3-3), Rajeunir (2-2), Tudor Sky (1-1) and Summer Haze (2-2). Star Lot, now gaining renown as the dam of Starline, caused a mild upset in 1979. She was the seventh favourite for a win.

Jennifer Rush has the most wins of tomorrow’s field — four — while Savana City, Noble Times, Tasman Dancer and Echorina have three apiece. The records of Nobel Times and Tasman Dancer are remarkably alike, each having had four attempts for three firsts and a second. Tasman Dancer’s defeat came at the hands of Noble Times, while the latter’s second placing was to Savana City. Another point of interest is that Jennifer Rush and Echorina, a recent addition to Graeme Rogerson’s stable, are by

Prince Echo and Savana City and Tasman Dancer have the Australian New Regent as their sire. Tasman Dancer may have a slight edge on the others at the 1200 m, and perhaps Savana City, Noble Times, Echorina and Jennifer Rush will be next.

Close followers of the two-year-olds this season may wonder at the absence of Teasing from this field. The filly gave herself a knock and developed some swelling. “She’s actually all right again,” said her trainer, Trevor McKee yesterday, “but I don’t know whether we could expect much better than fifth or sixth prize. “It might be easier to win the Eclipse Stakes at Ellerslie next week.” A big, open field will contest the D.B. Draught Handicap, the first leg of the T.A.B. double, but a Matamata result seems likely if Secret Ace, Jumblelak and Flight Bijou continue with their recent form.
