Live sheep exports

Sir, — I found the letter of Tony Banks (February 9) on the export of live sheep to Saudi Arabia disgusting. To write that “what happens to these animals is no concern of ours” betrays a coarseness which is foreign to our character. We are a civilised country. Of course it concerns us that our animals should be killed humanely and not be exposed to a barbarous lingering death. This is enforced by our law. There are other Muslim customs (such as cutting off the hand of an offender who is caught stealing) which cause our revulsion. It is not for us to encourage Muslims in the name of the "suffering ' farmers” or of Allah. — Yours, etc., ;

(MRS) HONOR COOPER.
