Copland hut to be assessed
By
JEFF HAMPTON
The future of a hut damaged by a big landslide in the Copland Valley, in Westland National Park, will be assessed today by D.S.I.R. geologists. “This will give us an assessment of the site and see whether we have to abandon it,” said the senior ranger at Fox Glacier, Mr Bruce Postill. The landslide, which was about 200 m wide, struck the Welcome Flat hut about 4.30 a.m. yesterday, after torrential rain in the area. The historic warden’s hut which adjoined the main hut was swept into the Copland River. The warden, Mr John Sim,' scrambled across to the main hut just before his hut crashed into the river. Mr Sim and the 10 occupants of the main hut waited upstairs in fear as mud swept through the ground floor. They included two Christchurch men, Messrs Rex Nisbett, aged 24, and Hugh Worrall, aged 23, as well as visitors from Australia, the United States, and Switzerland.
The group was lifted out from the hut by Squirrel .helicopter and taken to Fox Glacier about 10.30 a.m. yesterday, after calling for help on a radio with a makeshift power supply of torch and camera batteries.
The Lands and Survey Department would have to decide whether to repair the hut, which he estimated might cost up to $BO,OOO.
