The day in Parliament

PA Wellington Two petitions were presented when Parliament sat at 2 p.m. yesterday.

Mr D. C. McKinnon (Nat., Rodney) presented the petition of Vera Pollock and 45 others calling for the’speed limit on the Auckland Harbour Bridge to be reduced to 50 km/h.

Ms R. M. Richardson (Nat., Selwyn) presented the petition of S. Chamberlain and 110 others calling for the full retention of the Leeston Post Office.

Ministers answered three questions of the day and 10 questions on notice. Members then began the Wednesday afternoon general debate. When the general debate ended, Mr J. G. Dillon (Lab., Hamilton East), moved the introduction of the Waikato Anglican Boys' College Trust Bill. The bill was introduced and referred to the Justice and Law Reform Committee. Government notices of motion on wording for the enactment of legislation and sitting days for the parliamentary year were passed. Members then considered the interim report of the Communications and Road Safety Select Committee on intoxicant impaired driving, and took note of the committee’s report on a graduated driver licensing system. Members also considered the report of the Regulations Review Committee on regulation-making powers in legislation. The Minister of Police, Mrs Hercus, moved that the Police Complaints Authority and Miscellaneous Amendments Bill be referred to the Justice and Law Reform Select Committee. The House rose at 10.27 p.m.
