Oxford fire flares again
Rangiora reporter The fife that killed stock and destroyed about 40ha of farmland near Oxford on Monday flared in several places again yesterday afternoon after being fanned by strong north-west winds.
An engine from Oxford and another from Cust attended the fires which began about 2.30 ! p.m. on Mr Grahame Richards’ property, off Browns Rock Road.
The Oxford County Council workers had been checking the Burnt Hill area all day and called the fire station when they noticed several hot spots. The Oxford fire chief, Mr Ross Dailey, said strong winds had caused a flare-up in some .of the trees. The first fire took about 15 minutes to extinguish, but the firefighters, council officers and farmers spent about two hours going over the area dampening down further hot spots. Mr Dailey said he appreciated the help given by the Oxford County Council, which made two trucks carrying water tankers available, and also the farmers armed with their own small tanks and pumps bn the back of utility trucks. The Rangiora fire engine was also on standby at Cust yesterday.
