Among the favourites in the open section is lain
Buchanan, originally of Christchurch, who recently won his fifth national title in Gisborne.
Whangamata’s Lyndon Kennings, who recently turned professional, should also be up with the leaders.
Buchanan and Kennings are among eight seeded surfers who were invited to the contest and will
surf in heats against 24 others who have won their place from the original 48 contestants. Christchurch" surfers to watch include Mark Farrell and Tom Egnot. A junior section will also be held in the contest which will run from today at beaches where conditions are best. Contest details will be broadcast on ZM-FM each morning.
