Hubrich placed

Mattias Hubrich, of New Zealand, finished thirty-seventh in the men’s Super-G when the world alpine ski-ing championships continued at Crans-Montana, Switzerland. The only other New Zealand competitor, Simon Wi Rutene, was in twentieth place at the half-way stage, but fell further down the course. The news was received in a telex from Switzerland by the secretary of the New Zealand Ski Association, Mr Adrian Farnsworth, in Auckland. Mr Farnsworth said that Markus Hubrich, the

other member of the’ World Cup team, did not enter the race because of an old back injury. The high-speed disciplines put extra pressure on his lower back.

While Wi Rutene's failure to finish was disappointing, Mr Farnsworth said that Mattias Hubrich’s performance was reasonable for someone who was more of a slalom skier.

None of the New Zealanders competed in the combined events, but will have further chances in the giant slalom and special slalom this week.
