Forestry workers split from Labour
PA Dunedin State forestry wage workers in Otago voted yesterday to dissociate from the Labour Party in protest against Government actions establishing the new Forestry Corporation. The delegate for the New Zealand Workers’ Union of the Forest Service, Mr Patrick Hand, said the members were taking action to protest about the lack of consideration from the Government during corporatisation.
“We can’t even get an answer from the Forest Service or the corporation on what the new conditions of employment are likely to be,” he said after a meeting of some 75 union members. The vote to dissociate the union from the Labour Party was carried unanimously. Mr Hand said that Otago union members would also push to have their move adopted by other branches. They hoped for national support
