Pilot ‘lynched’

NZPA-Reuter Bahrain Angry Iranians were reported to have lynched a shot-down Iraqi pilot as civilian casualties mounted on both sides of the border in the Gulf war’s bitter air conflict. The Iranian news agency, Ima, said an Iraqi plane was downed yesterday in a dogfight over Arak, 260 km south-west of Teheran.

A separate report, monitored by the British Broadcasting Corporation,

said the pilot had baled out after bombing two towns in the same area.

“The people executed the Iraqi pilot in a revolutionary manner to avenge the daily criminal acts of the Baathist (Iraqi) regime,” the 8.8. C. quoted the report as saying. Iraq said its planes raided at least seven towns and cities yesterday in the air war which flared after Iran launched its January 9 offensive towards Basra on the

southern war front. Iran said the northwestern city of Mianeh was hit again after a raid on Sunday killed 68 girls at two schools and left 150 other people injured. President Ali Khamenei vowed to avenge the deaths.

Iraq said 14 people were killed and nearly 60 injured in Iranian artillery and air strikes on the strategic port city of Basra, and centres in northern Iraq.
