Divisive Anglican canon to visit N.Z.
PA Wellington The priest whose unsuccessful nomination to become Bishop of Wellington divided the Anglican Church in New Zealand will arrive in Wellington next week. Canon Paul Oestreicher will make a two-month visit to New Zealand at the invitation of the St Andrew’s Trust for the Study of Religion and Society. - - A sitting of the electoral synod of the Wellington Anglican diocese selected the German-born New Zealand Quaker-Anglican, who is 54, to become bishop.
But the choice did not receive the necessary approval of the bishops, clergy and laity throughout the rest of New Zealand. Since his nomination failed, Canon Oestreicher
has been appointed director of international ministry at Coventry Cathedral.
He is a nuclear dis armament activist and former chairman of the British section of Amnesty International.
Canon Oestreicher’s first official function after his arrival on February 10 will be his address, at a fundraising lunch for Amnesty International to be held in the gardens of Government House, Wellington, on February 15.
On March 1 he will preach at a service for Otago University in Dunedin. He will be in Auckland from March 16 to 22. He will give a series of lectures at St Matthew-in-the-City at 1 p.m. daily from March 17 to 20.
The Foundation for Peace Studies will host a puttie meeting on the
Wednesday evening of that week.
Canon Oestreicher will preach at two Auckland services on March 22, at 10 a.m. at St Matthew-in-the-City and at 7 p.m. in St Paul’s, Symonds Street. During part of his time in Auckland, Canon Oestreicher will stay at Government House as guest of the Governor-General, Sir Paul Reeves.
Sir Paul and Canon Oestreicher are long-time, friends.
Another official engagement for Canon Oes treicher will be to attend the inaugural meeting of the Conference of Churches in Aotearoa to be held in Rotorua at the end of March.
The conference replaces the National Council of Churches. ,
