Car imports pay
Cars privately imported from Japan .are being sold at a Christchurch sales yard for double what it cost to land them jn New Zealand. Some ; Mazda RX7s which have:been bought oh organised tours *;for between ~$12,000. and $15,000 — which includes duty, GST; purchase price, and shiooine — are being sold at Magnum Motors for up to $25,000. ; Magnum’s owner, Mr Garry Cliff, said the practice was legal and was common in Asian countries. Cars had to be sold through a licensed dealer and profits made on the deal were taxable, said Mr Cliff. People wanting to sell the cars through the firm would pay a commission. Magnum Motors had linked with Ann Cunningham Travel to provide organised car-buying trips since last October and so far about 140 people had booked. ? ' An agent would be stationed in Japan, said Mr Cliff.
