Sherry voice again on the air waves

PA Auckland The news, as read by Philip Sherry, was back in the public ear again yesterday — this time from Radio IZB, Auckland.

Sherry disappeared from the TV screens last November in a shuffle of news presenters that brought cries of outrage from viewers.

Yesterday, day one in his new career, he said: “It’s great. For the first time in years I don’t need to wear any makeup or put on a tie.”

Radio is nothing new to Sherry, who first found his roots on the wireless in Wellington where he worked for the New Zealand Broadcasting Service.

But after a decade spent almost exclusively on the small screen, the former 6.30 news reader is finding new techniques and technology tricky.

“I had to come in and practise a few times last week. I grew up in radio but the system’s changed a lot — it’s much more complex,” he said.

Sherry replaces a longtime breakfast news reader, Bob Leahy, from 5.45 a.m. to mid-morning.
