Hospital workers’ pay talks to reopen

PA Wellington A fresh attempt will be made next week to settle the hospital workers’ pay disputes after an Arbitration Court ruling yesterday. Representatives of the 2000-member Hotel and Hospital Workers’ Federation and the Employers’ Union have been told to reopen negotiations by a judge and two members of the Arbitration' Court who heard the case yesterday. The parties will meet on Wednesday and Thursday next week.

Two sets of talks have already broken down leading to industrial action, including a three-day strike, among workers in Wellington, Auckland, Christchurch, Southland, Tauranga and Whangarei.

Private hospital workers say they want a rise of from $6.75 an hour to $7.53 to bring them into line with their counterparts at public hospitals. The employed have made an offer of $7.25 an hour, which has already been rejected by the workers.
