Youth charged in Hobart fires
NZPA-AAP Hobart A youth, aged 16, would be charged with lighting fires near Hobart last week-end, police said yesterday. Inspector Tony Anstey, of the Hobart C. 1.8., said the youth had been remanded in custody to February 13 after appearing before the Hobart Children’s Court charged with setting fire to a rubbish container in Hobart on Sunday evening.
Police later would seek to have him charged with unlawfully setting fire to property and arson. The charges would be in relation to a fire in the
Derwent Valley on Saturday, where the Australian Newsprint Mills log storage yards and pine plantation were destroyed, Inspector Anstey said. Damage was estimated at $500,000, but the adjacent mill was unharmed. The Insurance Council of Australia said the week-end fires caused about $1.5 million damage.
The Tasmanian Fire Service said last evening there had been no fresh outbreak of fire yesterday, although a close watch was being kept on the remains of the weekend blazes.
