Weather prevents salvage of yacht
PA Invercargill Double Cross, the yacht of the solo round-the-world yachtsman, Harry Mitchell, ' remained beached near Fortrose after heavy seas prevented any salvage attempt yesterday. The yacht ran aground early.on Saturday morning when Mitchell, who was unfamiliar with New Zealand waters and without detailed charts, thought he was sailing well off the coast.
Strong winds, gusting up to 50 knots, and heavy seas ruled out any possibility of pulling the undamaged boat off the steep, sandy beach yesterday.
Earlier attempts on Sunday, using the Bluff vessel Savannah, were also thwarted by the strong winds and tide. Yesterday a team of local farmers secured the yacht and tried to pull it further up the beach to prevent any damage. Strong winds are forecast for the next two or three days and the main concern was to keep the yacht clear of the heavy seas.
A channel will be dug to allow the yacht to be floated out when the seas become calmer.
