Greyhounds Swannee Hobbs and Miss Janine to provide exciting contest in Cup

By

STEVE WILSON

The Canterbury-trained greyhounds, Swannee Hobbs and Miss Janine should provide an exciting contest in the Rover New Zealand Cup, the second trifecta event at the Christchurch Greyhound Racing Club’s meeting at Queen Elizabeth II Park today.

Swannee Hobbs has compiled a grand record over the longer distances this season. The fawn bitch has proved to be unbeatable at Invercargill over the 805 m, and when she last appeared at Q.E. II Park at the distance, she won easily.

Her Weedons trainer Ray Adcock has been preparing the daughter of Kilty Hobbs-Lisa Havoc for this race for some time, and if she can unleash her powerful finishing burst, then she would provide her dam with her second winner of the race.

The first being Aera’s Havoc, which won last year’s cup. The Jock Walsh-trained bitch has taken some time to recapture her good form, and could find that this year’s field is slightly stronger.

Miss Janine must rate a big chance after winning impressively at the distance on January 8. She was badly checked at the start at her last outing and is sure to force a strong pace all the way. ’ Although beaten at his last start, Magic Command should be a warm favourite for the day’s other feature the Lucky Petfood Futurity Stakes, the first leg of the T.A.B.

concession double. The son of Club’s Colours has the added advantage of drawing box No. 1 and it is hard to see him beaten from there, even though the race has attracted a top field.
