Kiwi lottery prize doubles
Wellington reporter
The Golden Kiwi lottery will be revamped from next week with the first prize doubled to $200,000. The ticket price will rise by only a half to $3. The last increase was in 1981 when tickets were doubled to $2. The Minister of Internal Affairs, Mr Tapsell, said Golden Kiwi Jackpot Lottery No. 311 now on sale would be the last before the change. A larger jackpot would be a special feature of the revamped lottery, he said. The jackpot would be able to rise to $1 million, increasing $30,000 with each draw, and as under the existing system, there would be two chances each time to find a winner. If the jackpot reached $1 million without a winner, a final draw would be made from the

The existing jackpot will terminate when the pool reaches $400,000. Other main-draw prizes will be increased substantially: second will be $30,000 (now $25,000), and third, $20,000 ($12,000), with the tenth prize, $2500 ($2000). Minor prizes will remain the same, as will the total number in each draw, 3607. The total in prize money and jackpot allocation will rise substantially to $440,000, from $290,000.
Mr Tapsell said he hoped the higher prizes would encourage patrons to continue supporting the lottery, which had a valued place in fundraising for many good causes.
