Wool steady

PA Napier The Napier wool sale ended on a stronger note after a hesitant start yesterday.

The Wool Board, through New Zealand Wools, supported the market actively, the official report said. There was a moderate to steady tone.

The offering of 17,209 bales was made up of 37 per cent mature fleece, 24 per cent second-shear, 23 per cent lamb firsts, 6 per cent bulky skirtings, 6 per cent clothing oddments, and 3 per cent locks.

The main buyers were East and Western Europe, New Zealand mills and merchant scourers, and Asia for lambs’ wool.

Compared with the sale in Dunedin on January 22, fleece wool, 33 to 34 micron, of good style was buyers’ favour; good to average style was sellers’ favour and 37 micron good style was firm.

The Wool Board bid on 5280 bales (38.3 per cent), and bought or had passed to it 1872 bales (11.1 per cent).

The market indicator for greasy wool was 406 c a kilogram, and 547 c for clean wool.

Official prices were: Crossbred, 35 micron, 105 to 115 mm: Good, 559 to 571, average to good, 551 to 558, average, 536 to 550.
