Heavy support for peace day
Overwhelming community support for the international peace and people’s day to be held at North Hagley Park on Sunday is an affirmation of the popularity of the Summer Times programme, say Summer Times staff. (Peace and cultural groups have contributed more than 40 stalls and displays for the day, which will be held from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.) This year’s international day is a combination of similar peace and people’s days that were held separately last year.
Up to 200 pigeons for peace from five Christchurch racing pigeon clubs will also be released between 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. Appetites will be satisfied by a number of ethnic food stalls,
including a hangi that has been organised by the Te Kotahitanga Maori Club. The cost of the hangi will be $3 a person. Some of the performers include the Erewhon Morris Dancers, Badi Band, Farandol Dancers, Dutch Folkdancers, the Banks Peninsula Folk Club, the Austrian Choir and the Tupai Family. The Master of Ceremonies for the day will be Oily Ohlsen.
Activities for children have been planned including volley ball and parachute games, as well as a display of black sheep. A display by parachutists and a mock battle on Lake Victoria between Pirates and Alf’s Imperial Army is also likely to draw many spectators.
