Hibbs dazzles again
Two more records fell last evening in the sixth session of the Canterbury swimming championships held at Queen Elizabeth II Park. Dallas Hibbs dazzled yet again, taking his' recordbreaking tally to eight, by winning the 13/14 years 100 m freestyle in 58.35 seconds, nearly half a second faster than his previous record of 58.81, set last month. Nichola West, in the 12 years and under 100 m freestyle, knocked nearly one third of a second off her own Canterbury record of 1:03.91, set in Timaru at the South Island championships last month. West has improved markedly over the last year, bettering her time of 1:06.78 when she was placed second in the nationals last year. Although these were the only two records broken placings for races were keenly contested. Three first and second place-getters were separated by less than a second. In the 12 years and under boys’ 100 m freestyle, New Brighton’s lain Haycock was a mere 11 hundredths of a second faster than his clubmate, Sean Hibbs, while in the 13/14 years 100 m girls’ freestyle, Jane Collins eclipsed Phillipa Langrell by two two-hundredths of a second. Elizabeth Ross pipped her younger sister Michaela to the post in the open girls’ 100 m breaststroke by less than half a second.
