Mailroom wrecked by bomb
NZPA-AAP Brisbane A man was seriously injured and five others were taken to hospital when a bomb destroyed the ground floor of Brisbane's Roma Street Mail Exchange yesterday. The police said an employee in the Customs Department’s parcel examination area had just placed a large package on his desk for examination when it exploded. He was seriously injured and others working nearby suffered shock and minor injuries. According to the Customs Department Senior Inspector of Postal Control, Jeff Brown, a suitcase or parcel believed to be the cause of the explosion had probably been at the Customs section of the mail exchange since Sunday. The area around the exchange was cordoned off by the police, and Army explosives experts combed the debris for more devices. “It was a miracle that no-one was killed,” said a police officer at the scene.
