Bid to halt ‘camps war’
NZPA-Reuter Damascus Senior members of a special Arab League committee arrived in Damascus yesterday on a search for a solution to the Lebanon "camps war”. The committee would start its talks by meeting Syrian leaders. “Because Syria has a strong role in Lebanon the committee hoped Syria would give all its efforts
to help a cease-fire,” said the Algerian Minister who • heads the committee. The “camps war” for control of five Palestinian refugee settlements in Beirut and south Lebanon has flared between Palestinian guerrillas and Shi'ite Muslim Amal militiamen since Israel pulled out of most of south Lebanon in 1985. More than 700 people have died since a third
serious bout of fighting erupted at the end of September. The committee is expected to meet Amal’s pro-Syrlan leader, Nabih Beirri, and pro-Syrian Palestinian . officials before heading to Beirut, although Mr Berri.. told reporters yesterday that he had not decided whether to meet it or not. "It (the committee) is of no use.”
