Huge jackpot hopes dashed

PA Auckland The prospect of a mammoth jackpot dividend was effectively dashed when Biltmore, then Single Shot, won at Avondale yesterday. The pool for distribution had reached $236,194. Going into the fourth and second-last of the jackpot races, 318 entries remained alive. Of these, 137 went on Biltmore. They included 81 for transfer to Single Shot, a hot favourite and runaway winner in the final leg. This meant a jackpot dividend of $2915. If John Junior had been first, instead of second Single Shot, the dividend would have been more than 10 times bigger. The first two races of the jackpot were won by well-backed runners. Ashbridge, the first winner, and third favourite, win and place, carried no fewer than 22,579 entries, and 7924 of these were coupled up with the winner of the second race, 1-2 favourite Kyrie Eleison. Of the five winners, only Wairere Gold, in the third race of the jackpot,

caused any sort of surprise. His success brought the number of entries still live from 7924 to 318.

The jackpot, which began in June, brought a huge increase today from the usual midweek race crowd. After the first four races other betting had risen 65 per cent.
