Lewis paves way for cricket victory

Maia Lewis’s 71 helped Canterbury beat North Shore by 35 runs on the second day of the national second XI women's cricket tournament at Dunedin yesterday. Sharon Weaver, with her right-arm medium pace, was the most effective Canterbury bowler, with four for 24.

Pene McLaren had an excellent game for North Shore, taking three for 25 before scoring a brisk 20. Good off-spin bowling by Charlotte Dickenson helped Wanganui to an upset 63-run

win over Taranaki. Taranaki slumped to be all out for 67 after Roana Hill, a century-maker on the first day, had been run out for 26. Dickenson took four wickets for 16 to sustain the pressure on the Taranaki batswomen. Leonie Papworth’s steady 43 in 125 minutes helped Wanganui to a total of 130. Jan Hall had an excellent double to help Otago to a 33run win over Manawatu. She scored a solid 36 and then

took five wickets for 29 off 14.5 overs. In spite of an aggressive finish, Wellington lost to Hawke's Bay by 24 runs. Suzanne Hampton scored 42 for Hawke’s Bay and the team fielded magnificently to gain the win. Scores.— Pool A: Wanganui 130 (L. Papworth 43, H. Yaiden 25; T. Bennett 4/23) beat Taranaki 67 (R.
