Hadlee does not approve of having woman umpire
PA Auckland Richard Hadlee, the champion cricketer and New Zealand Sportsman of 1986, believes that a woman’s place is not umpiring men’s first-class cricket.
Hadlee played in a threeday Shell Trophy match against Wellington last week in which Pat Carrick of Christchurch became the first woman to umpire a men’s first-class match in New Zealand.
“I am not questioning Pat Carrick’s competence, she made a couple of very good decisions and did not make too many mistakes,” Hadlee said.
"I do question a woman’s place in a man’s environment, subjected to verbal abuse and incidents.
Meh would handle such things better. ’’l don’t think - a woman should be asked to accept what goes on out there. Ladies being abused in the middle is not the right situation as far as I am con-
cerned.” Hadlee said he expected that he might "get it in the neck” for making allegedly sexist remarks, but felt that men’s cricket was a man’s game and should be umpired by men.
