Edward quits
NZPA-AP London Prince Edward will resign from the Royal Marines, Buckingham Palace announced yesterday. i The Prince, aged 22, met his J. commanding officer, Colonel lan Moore, for 10 minutes at the commando training centre at Lympstone, Devon, yesterday morning. A Royal Marines spokesman said: “We are obviously disappointed he has resigned his commission and we wish him every success in his future career.” An opinion poll published yesterday before the resignation was an-
nounced showed that an overwhelming majority r of. Britons were sympathetic to Prince Edward x&hd thought he should leave if he wished. Telephone Surveys, Ltd, polled 1000 adults last week, of whom 80.7 per cent, thought the Prince should be allowed to decide his future. Twelve per cent said he should stick with the Marines, and the rest were undecided. The Prince, who graduated from Cambridge University in June, was the first member of the Royal Family to join the Marines, and is the first to drop out early from the military.
