Pantyhose and Petone
Murder in Fancydress and A Murder or Three. Both by Laurie Mantell. Imprint Books, 1986, $7.65 each (paperback). These two books are genuinely set in New Zealand, in the form of Lower Hutt. They are police procedurals involving the wiles of Detective Sergeant Steven Arrow. One concerns the strangling of three women by pantyhose, and the other the death of a policeman at a businessman’s wild west festival in Petone. They are unexceptional books which are easy to read and which have a low level feel of New Zealand about them. To some extent this is sincere and to some extent brought about by the annoying device of having most characters stick “y’know?” on to the end of every other statement. At the price though, one can hardly go wrong and if they are read abroad they will at least let the rest of the world know that tights are called pantyhose in this country. — Ken Strongman.
