Research funding

Sir,—l applaud your editorial on the urgent need for more research and development to be funded by the Government and private sector. Both political parties should pledge positive programmes for this. Industry should get generous tax concessions in return for investment in research and development, especially when using the D.S.I.R. I would also like to see particular research programmes supported by the general public, such as a low-cost birth-control “pill” for cats and dogs (a pet project that should be implemented for humane reasons). The second board market of the Stock Exchange should be utilised for such specific research projects having commercial potential. The public would provide the venture capital by buying shares

in an incorporated research pro-’ ject Risky, yes, but I would be willing to risk investing in NeW Zealand’s research and development for the future.—Yours, etc.,. (Mrs) SHIRLEY J. MILLER. January 5, 1987.
