GARDENING

The spotlight falls again today on plants which I believe do not get the recognition which they deserve. This week we look at the small genus of Raphiolepis, of which but two are fairly readily obtainable.
At present R. ‘DelacouriiV a French-raised hybrid, is continuing to flower as it has done for several weeks now. Its rosy-pink, terminal panicles of apple-blossom-like flowers are likely to appear for some time yet before giving way to persistent blue-black fruit. R. umbellata is characterised by its very thick, leathery, almost oval, dark green leaves. Its flowers are white, slightly fragrant, and occur for a shorter time in the summer but it bears larger fruit.
