World cashmere conference here

New Zealand’s potential as a major producer of cashmere fibre will be the focus of the 1987 Second International Cashmere Conference, to be held at Lincoln College between May 18 and 21. The conference, organised by the Cashmere Producers of New Zealand, will provide information for producers, processors and investors in the fast-growing cashmere industry. Through a three-day programme of lectures, seminars and workshops the conference will provide practical information towards meeting the industry’s objectives of increasing quality, productivity and profitability within all its sectors.

Keynote speakers will address the present state of the cashmere industry both in New Zealand and Australia and provide an overview of its prospects. A range of technical subjects will be covered in workshops on such varied topics as goat health and management, buck selection and hightech breeding. Information on the latest farming and management techniques will be presented and collated into a volume of technical papers which will be available following the completion of the conference.

The important subjects of fibre presentation and

marketing will also be covered with speakers from both New Zealand and overseas taking part. The opportunities available for investment in the cashmere industry will be outlined and explained in both seminars and workshops by the main sponsor to the conference, Northumbria Cashmere Pty, Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Agricola Resources, Ltd. The Northumbria Cashmere executive director, Mr Rob Moodie, said the conference reflects the growing maturity of cashmere production in New Zealand and provides an ideal opportunity to bring together the key groups in the industry to review both its latest developments and future directions.

“We hope the conference will stimulate investment in the cashmere industry, create a technical resource for producers and emphasise the critical role marketing will play in the future success of the industry,” he said.

Information on the Second International Cashmere Conference can be obtained from the offices of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries and most stock and station companies. Full details can also be obtained by writing to The Secretary, C.A.P.R.0.N.Z., Box 8, Darfield, Canterbury.
