Aggressive Dive takes chess
PA Wanganui Russel Bi ve, of Wellington, is the 1986-87 chess champion of New Zealand. In the final round in Wanganui yesterday, Dive quickly took a draw against Tony Love, of Otago, which was sufficient for Dive to advance his tally to points and win the title outright Ortvin Sarapin, of North Shore, had a chance yesterday to share the title — but
only if he won and Dive lost, but that was not to be. . Divehad already drawn and he could do not better than second, Sarapin quickly agreed to a draw against Auckland's Michael Hopewell, even though Sarapin had the better position. Ben Martin of Otago, had a chance to tie with Sarapin. He played aggressively against Peter Green, of Auckland, but pressed too hard and quickly lost.
