Third outright win for Canterbury B

By

BOB SCHUMACHER

Canterbury B scored its third outright win from as many matches in this season’s national second Xis cricket championship when it completed an easy 10-wicket win over Northern Districts B at the Ashburton Domain Oval yesterday.

Although the victory was decisive in the end, Canterbury B felt some consternation as two hours of the morning period passed without success.

Northern Districts, resuming only 39 runs ahead and with just four wickets remaining, had two stubborn batsmen in the all-rounder, Derek Beard, and the wicket-keeper, Nick Lloyd. They prospered on a pitch which gave the bowlers little encouragement and through two difficult chances being dropped. Lloyd, especially, was not afraid to dispense the loose balls and Beard displayed a cultured off-drive. Canterbury B was at a stage whereby the bowling

was in hope more than in expectancy of a wicket when Lloyd jumped down the pitch at Andrew Nuttall, the ball taking spin and Paul Rutledge completing a swift stumping. The pair had added 73 for the seventh wicket in 136 minutes, but once the stand was broken the tail capitulated. The outstanding bowling came from the left-arm spinner, Nuttall. He thrived on a marathon spell, delivering 57 overs and taking five wickets for the second time in the match.

Canterbury B made no contest of the second innings. Blair Hartland, after a shaky start, drove fluently off the back foot and timed the ball beautifully in a fine innings of 81 not out of which over half came in boundaries. • He was well backed by Jon Preston, the left-hander taking few risks, but unleashing some strong drives when the opportunity allowed. They reached their 100 partnership in 110 minutes. Scores:—
