Small fire on board Japanese vessel

A spark from a welder is believed to have started a small fire in a Japanese fishing vessel berthed at Lyttelton yesterday morning. Floats on a fishing net on the deck of the Daishin Maru No. 22 caught fire just after 8 a.m. An engine from Lyttelton and a rescue tender and engine from Christchurch went to the 95m vessel, which is berthed at No. 3 East. However, the fire was out by the time the engines arrived, said a Fire Service spokesman.

The crew had used a fire extinguisher and a hose on board the vessel to put out the blaze.

The fire started near where welding was being done on the deck of the vessel. Little damage was done.
