Transport risky
PA Auckland Transporting radioactive material is the most risky aspect of a proposed irradiation plant in Auckland, says a newly, released environmental impact report.
If an accident occurred it would take only one and a half minutes for someone within 50m of the source to get the maximum acceptable dose of radiation. There would be an evacuation of the nearby population and the radioactive material would be shielded by builders mix dropped by helicopter or truck. About 80cm of dry material would be needed to seal off the radiation.
Though an accident of this sort is described by the report as "remote in the extreme,” the police and fire brigade would be told about the arrival of any radioactive material. The report has been prepared by Worley Consultants, Ltd, of Auckland, for the company proposing the plant, Ansell Steritech, Ltd. It was requested by the Health Department.
