Union sets strike dates

By

GLENN HASZARD

Domestic and kitchen workers at private hospitals In Christchurch will strike on January 29. 30 and 31 unless the national award covering their pay and conditions is settled before then. . * Hospitals which will be affected include St George’s maternity -hospital and the Southern Cross Trust Hospital. Sister L. Moore, deputy matron at St George’s, said that the hospital would stay open during the three days and would have to manage as best it could with management and, if necessary, volunteers from the Friends of St George’s group. A disputes committee of the Canterbury Hospital Workers’ Union finalised the dates at a meeting in Christchurch yesterday. The union had warned before Christmas of likely industrial action some time this month.

The union’s secretary, Mr Martin Moodie, said that it was still “on the cards” that the dispute over the national award could be resolved before the strike.

Private hospital workers In other centres have also resolved to strike for three days, but have not fixed dates. .

The private hospital workers want wage parity with public hospital domestics and orderlies.
