Scrub fire cause remains unknown

Half a hectare of scrub near the surf club building at Spencer Park was destroyed in a fire yesterday.

Five fire appliances were called out to deal with the blaze which broke out shortly before 3.30 p.m. Two fire engines from Brooklands and one from St Albans were joined by the Waimairi water tender and a hose layer from headquarters, said the Fire Service mobilis-

ing officer. About 500 metres of hose had to be laid to pump water to the seat of the fire, he said. The fire was not being treated as suspicious, but there was no indication of the cause. The spokesman said that the cause might never be known. The area was very dry.

"It could have been a cigarette butt, or a spark from a motorbike — anything,” he said.
