Problem delays ship’s voyage around N.Z.

in Blenheim A serious mechanical problem has delayed the Spirit of New Zealand’s first circumnavigation of New Zealand. It is expected the ship will spend at least nine days at Picton while its variable pitch propeller is fixed. The relieving master, Captain Peter Petherbridge, said the vessel’s engine would have to be lifted out before the propeller could be fixed. He said the two scheduled day trips from Lyttelton later this week had been cancelled.
Originally she would have picked up a new crew of trainees at Lyttelton before sailing to Timaru and Dunedin. Details of a new schedule had not been worked out. “The ship will return to the scheduled programme as soon as possible,” he said. The fault developed on Friday afternoon as the vessel was motoring into Pelorus Sound. She sailed to Picton for repairs. The trainees on board have been taking part in an alternative programme based on the water and the Cobham Outward Bound School at Anakiwa.
