High fire danger
PA Wellington A 10-week dry spell over much of the North Island has caused serious water shortages and a high fire risk in parts of the Kapiti Coast, Horowhenua, Manawatu and Wairarapa. The problem is critical in the coastal area of Featherston County. The County clerk, Mr Ross Smith, said holiday makers had been ignoring a total fire ban imposed in late November, and were “indiscriminately” lighting bonfires which had so far caused three
fires round Palliser Bay. The county did not have a community water supply and residents relying on their own bores or tank water were running low, he said. Lack of a water supply also made fighting fires more difficult. Featherston and Masterton boroughs said conditions were dry, but they had no water shortages or serious fire risk. Masterton county reported no problems so far, but would soon consider restrictions if the dry weather continued.
