Benefits only for children at school
PA Wellington Changes in entitlement to family benefit mean the Social Welfare Department will soon be asking parents of 15-year-old children whether their offspring will be returning to school this year. A decision in last year’s Budget means children who are 15 and have left school are no longer entitled to family benefit However, parents of 15 to 18-year-olds who stay at school will continue to be eligible for family benefit and family support The Minister of Social Welfare, Mrs Hercus, said her department would post out certificates of attendance to parents to be signed by head teachers and returned to the department
In some cases payment of family benefit would have stopped at the end of last year, she said. However, payment of arrears would be arranged once the certificates of attendance for this year had been received.
