Segregation

Sir,—J. Maw (January 3) is upset at the recent Maori tennis tournament, which he interprets as “Maori people abusing the system to encourage racial prejudice.” J. Maw should know that “the system” is an entirely pakeha creation which reflects the aspirations of our homeland, Europe. The consequent rejection of Maori aspirations resulted in a feeling of inferiority from which the Maori people are only now emerging. If a Maori tennis tournament can encourage confidence and self-esteem in a group desperately in need of such qualities then let us have more of them. “The Press” recently reported a Chinese-New Zealand basketball team on tour in China; has reported on about 100 Maori versus pakeha rugby games; reported countless agelimit sports and sports with weight limits. No social discrimination is present because none is intended. Society is a conglomeration of minority groups all with special needs. — Yours, etc., GRAEME YARDLEY. January 3, 1987.
