Golf convener sets example

The convener of the Canterbury golf selection panel, Bob Bradley, was a man of action rather than words in the recent Waitikiri New Year 36-hole tournament.

Instead of walking the fairways as a critical observer, Bradley took to the course as a competitor, and a few holes from the finish he was being hailed by some as the

likely winner. A Canterbury Freyberg Rose Bowl representative in 1971 and 1972, Bradley was in equal seventh place after his morning effort of 76, five-over par. But he relished playing the back nine first in the afternoon and turned in 35, one-under par. At that point he was two shots off the pace set by Warwick Sherwood (Waitikiri) and one behind Paul Hoffman (Russley). Bradley, who first played the course' 33 years ago, parred the twenty-eighth and twentyninth holes but then faltered dramatically, dropping five shots over the last seven holes.

“I suddenly realised how many holes I had played for the day,” Bradley said afterwards in explanation of his demise.

Still, his second round of 75 and total of 151 was good enough for fifth placing, only four strokes behind the victor, Sherwood.
