Softball upset
Canterbury recorded an upset 2-1 victory over last year’s champion, Auckland, on the second day of the Winstone under-19 boys national softball championships at Lower Hutt yesterday. For Canterbury Tane Sutton came home in the top of the first innings and Mark Wright followed suit three innings later. The side’s pitcher, Gerard Graham, struck out a remarkable 15 Auckland batters. In its morning game Canterbury had crushed Taupo, 9-0. On the first day Canterbury had an equally comfortable 11-1 win over Wairarapa. The Canterbury side had a win and a loss when the girls under-19 national tournament began in Auckland. Canterbury led Counties, 50, at the top of the first innings, but a combination of errors under pressure and good batting eventually gave Counties a 10-5 victory. Canterbury’s .Debbie Hohepa in centre field was outstanding. Later Canterbury had a solid 14-6 win over Bay of Plenty, scoring nine runs in its second turn at bat.
