Spitting costs up?

Authorities are hoping to legislate for better manners on Sydney’s streets by raising the penalties for such activities as spitting, urinating, and indecent exposure. The New South Wales Premier, Mr Barry Unsworth, has called for a review of the level of fines for offensive behaviour.

A spokesman for the Premier said Mr Unsworth sought a review after visiting the strip-

show district of Kings Cross, and decided the area would be better used if behaviour was cleaned up.

According to the president of the Kings Cross Chamber of Commerce, Mrs Heather Currey, the situation had reached the stage where people were resenting authority and “doing all sorts of things in the streets.”

At present, maximum fines for offences in public places range from $lOO to $4OO.
