Fuel-saving propellers

The New Zealand Pacific, which was in Lyttelton over the week-end, was fitted with increased fuel-efficiency propellers during dry docking in Hamburg recently.

The New Zealand Pacific is the New Zealand Line’s flagship, and at 42,276 tonnes is one .of the largest refrigerated container ships in the world.

Mr Charles Speight, managing director of the Shipping Corporation, the New Zealand Line’s parent company, said the new propellers and steering system were expected to result in a saving of about $200,000 on the annual fuel bill at today’s low fuel prices. The dry docking, which also included underwater painting, machinery surveys and outstanding repairs, cost $l.B million. ARRIVALS ’ Godwit (9 a.m.) 31,671, Wellington, (S.C.N.Z.).
