Public servants in Chathams may act

Chatham Islands public servants have not ruled out use of industrial action in their dispute over payment for electricity. The 20 public servants on the islands! are upset about having to pay for any electricity they use above the average New Zealand household usage of 7500 units a year. Electricity on the islands costs 38.6 c a unit. Previously the Government paid for all electricity used by the public servants. A spokesman for the group,' Mr Stuart Smythe, said the Minister of State Services, Mr Rodger, had refused a call for a moratorium on any changes

until the public servants could discuss the issue with him. “His basis was that the Combined State Unions and the State Services Commission had negotiated it, so therefore we have agreed to it through our unions.” Mr Smythe said the group would write a letter to the C.S.U. “expressing our disappointment” at the settlement. They would also write again to Mr Rodger suggesting some alternative policies, he said. If persuasion failed, Mr Smythe said, the public servants “certainly haven’t discounted industrial action.”
