Spirit towed into Picton

The Spirit of New Zealand was towed into Picton yesterday with propeller problems. The relieving master, Captain Peter Petherbridge, said he did not know how long it would take to fix the vessel’s propeller control gear. The Spirit of New Zealand is on her first circumnavigation of New

Zealand. She is being sailed by 36 Spirit of New Zealand trainees, aged between 15 and 19.

Captain Petherbridge said the ship developed mechanical problems in Pelorus Sound on Friday evening. Originally she would have sailed on to the Cobham Outward Bound School, but they decided

to sail to Picton for repairs.

A Picton boat-builder towed the vessel part of the way. Captain Petherbridge did not know if the vessel would keep to its schedule and arrive in Lyttelton on Friday. j “Until we. get the thing apart we really don’t know,” he said.
