Fishermen 'killing penguins’

PA Dunedin Thoughtless amateur fishermen are killing penguins at Moeraki, according to an honorary ranger, Mrs Janice Jones.

The birds, some of them rare species, are being accidentally caught and drowned in nets set near a yellow eyed penguin colony, said Mrs Jones, who lives at the Moeraki lighthouse.

“The fishermen set

their nets just on the edge of the kelp, which is where the penguins come in to get to their colony,” she said. “About 20 per cent of the colony died of starvation last year and now they are threatened by this.” Mrs Jones tries to save as many penguins as she can but is faced with the problem of chicks at the colony starving to death when their parents are

caught in nets. “They set their nets there to try to catch salmon, I think, but they would be much better setting them at Fish Reef which is just a few hundred metres away.” Other penguin species are also dying in the nets. Mrs Jones has the corpses of a rare Fiordland crested penguin and a little blue penguin as proof.
